You Need a Renaissance!
The translation for the word Renaissance means “REBIRTH”. People refer to a time period as a “Renaissance” if they see it as a development/change in a places culture. This change represents “progress”.
The “Renaissance” happened in Europe in the 1300’s and continued for the next couple centuries. It brought Europe out of the dark Middle Ages; society made improvements in education, the arts, medicine and the sciences. Overall it improved people’s lives.
Let’s listen to Flocabulary’s song about the Renaissance titled You Need A Renaissance.

Flocabulary did a pretty good job with their one song about the Renaissance- but I think you can do even better.
Our first assignment for “The Renaissance” is for you to create your own “Renaissance” Album.
There are a couple of very important things that happened during the renaissance which you will have to write “songs” about-
Track One
Why the time period was called “The Renaissance” – include information about “interest in Humanism” and what a “renaissance man” is.
Track Two
1. A song about the artists and their accomplishments during the Renaissance. I suggest you look to Leonardo De Vinci and Michelangelo for inspiration.
(For Leonardo look to his accomplishments in the Arts [the Mona Lisa] and Science [his inventions]).
(For Michelangelo look to his accomplishments in the Arts [carving statues like David and painting the Sistine Chapel] and his architectural achievement [designing the Dome of St. Peter's Cathedral]

Track Three
1. A song about Johann Gutenberg’s invention The Printing Press and how it “changed” the world.
I know this may sound daunting,
but I promise it is not too hard. You are not being asked to write an ENTIRE song for each track- I just want 4 to 8 lines for each one. Once again this goes back to “quality not quantity”. Spend the time and effort talking about the subject- not something unrelated.
This is an example of some lyrics created in another class to talk about why the Pilgrims left England and went to the Americas.

The Album Cover
The last part of this album is to create a piece of cover art using one of the “ground breaking” artistic techniques of the Renaissance. The technique is called “perspective” – it makes the picture look more realistic to the viewer.
For an example look at Leonardo’s use of perspective in his famous painting The Last Supper.
Use page 414 and 415 to help you understand what perspective is and how it works.

Some examples of art “pre-renaissance”
– notice the lack of depth & perspective
Renaissance - Part Two
Langston Hughes
After you have just done such a great job with the above assignment I know every time you hear the word Renaissance you will think about the things people did centuries ago.
But as you remember, the word Renaissance means “Rebirth” and it can be used to describe a large number of different movements. Two other very important “Renaissances” which affect us today are the Mexican and Harlem Renaissances.
Part two of your Renaissance unit is to create a Venn Diagram showing the similarities between the original Renaissance and either the Harlem or Mexican Renaissance.
Things I want you to compare include, but are not limited to-
Where they occurred,
When they occurred,
Who were the famous people.
What sorts of things were created
And how they have had an impact on us.
If you need a refresher on how to make a Venn Diagram ask Mr. Fulbright.
The Venn Diagram is below
