The Great Debate
Which one of these two quotes do you agree with more?
Team Black & Gold
Humans are naturally “cruel, greedy, and selfish” and that without order life would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short”
Or
Team Crimson & Blue
Men are naturally good- they tend to be reasonable and act on morals.
Round Two
Team Black & Gold
Because humans are “cruel, greedy & selfish” the best type of government to have is one that is powerful enough to control society and prevent chaos.
Or
Team Crimson & Blue
Because people are basically good, the best type of government is one that respects the rights of the people.

The Enlightenment
An Enlightenment era French Salon
The Enlightenment was another time period- just like the Renaissance & the Scientific Revolution- where people’s desire for knowledge and answers led to some notable advances in thinking.
Thanks to the Scientific Revolution it had been decided that things should no longer be accepted “just because”. The quote from René Descartes “I think therefore, I am” became the new standard.
While it may seem like the Philosophers from centuries ago don’t really have an impact on us… their writings still influence the leaders and thinkers of our time.

The activity
Some of the questions debated by these philosophers have no answer that can be proven, such as the question-
“What is human nature”…
Even though there is no answer the ideas those questions generate can have an impact on our world – such as
“What is the role of government?”
The project for this section’s learning objective is going to be using an online social networking site www.grouply.com
The class is going to be divided into two groups “Team Hobbes” and “Team Locke”. The team you are joining is based on the side that you took between the quotes at the top of the page.
Black & Gold = Team Hobbes
Crimson & Blue = Team Locke
